The internet is full of “open-source”™ free software that can bed use to create exciting sound and visuals. The sessions will be led by Antonio Roberts who is a renowned digital artist and expert coder. Antonio will introduce the group to the Estuary live coding platform, with the aim of writing computer programs “on the fly”.The fast feedback loops and improvisatory spirit of live coding can result in complex and encouraging sound and visual effects.
Throughout the 3 days you will experiment programming with very simple code sounds and visuals. These workshops intend to de-mystify technology and reveal its design decisions, limitations, and creative potential. You will also produce a final performance all together at the end!
This workshop takes inspiration from NAE’s upcoming exhibition titled Cut & Mix, which interrogates notions of race, gender, sexualities, class, place and identities in relation to Black British masculinities.
As a Black man himself, Antonio Roberts is passionate about inspiring young Black children to gain skills on coding music and visuals. Through his practice as an artist, Antonio often recreates Black characters from arcade video games of his youth, highlighting the stereotypical tropes they employed, at the same time raising notions of Blackness, place and situatedness.
Please note, participants must attend all 3 sessions to make the most of this workshop. Participants will not need any music or tech experience.
You will need to bring a laptop and headphones for these workshops (NAE can provide laptops and headphones if required, please get in touch with us in advance).
This is a face-to-face event at New Art Exchange. Due to social distancing guidelines, we only have 10 spaces available for each age group, and booking in advance is required.
