Cyber Cafe took inspiration from the first internet cafes that acted as a site for optimism and excitement at the early potential of the internet. These spaces offered new possibilities for connection, collaboration and creative self expression.

Site Gallery’s young people’s collective the Society of Explorers collaborated with artists Antonio Roberts and Lucy Cheesman over a series of workshops, experimenting with open-source platforms and old technologies. Together they designed an interactive exhibition reimagining the creative potential of the internet cafe of today.

Hyperobject is a video collaboration between Antonio Roberts and Samiir Saunders which combines live coding and spoken word poetry. The piece takes the form of a four-part narrative epic which chronicles the grieving process of reckoning with the enormity of the climate crisis, from denial and despair into acceptance and finally a place of defiant hope.

Hyperobject was commissioned by MAIA for the We Make Tomorrow event in October 2022.

Throughout 2019 and the early part of 2020 I led a programme for Barbican’s Young Creatives called Design Yourself.

What does it mean to be human? Can technology be used to replicate the pheromone communication of ant colonies? Can we use technology to mimic the camouflage abilities of chameleons? Can movement be used as a language, similar to the waggle dance of honey bees?

badcirculation is a collaboration between Antonio Roberts (hellocatfood) and Maria Witek (mxwx). Working primarily with the open source TidalCycles software, they create electronic dance music with the randomness of algorithmically generated beats. They each bring their diverse musical backgrounds to explore genres including Grime, Footwork, House and UK Garage.

Myself and Rachel Sweeney will be returning to MART in Dublin, Ireland to perform at Moving Bodies Festival from 24th-25th June. For this we will be revisiting Multiplicitous States (previously QWOP Dance):

Multiplicitous states is a new collaborative work which seeks to question the politics of difference in looking at dance across virtual and live performance sites. The piece is a sound/visual/movement collaboration between butoh dancer Rachel Sweeney, digital glitch artist Antonio Roberts with sound design by experimental electronica artist Shibby Shitegeist. This performance examines the collaborative practices of butoh dancer Rachel Sweeney and digital glitch artist Antonio Roberts, which explore intersections between digitised projected movement and butoh movement to interrogate notions of multiplicity and synaesthesia in performance.

During my 2016 Fellowship at Birmingham Open Media I will continue my collaboration with Lucy Hutchinson to further the work we have been producing in response to the growing surveillance culture. We will be devising creative interventions which aim to circumvent invasive surveillance technology.

These interventions will take a variety of approaches and will not be limited to purely hardware/software based response. In one such intervention we will be taking inspiration from the work of artists such as Adam Harvey and Zach Blas and develop a series of masks that can be worn to obscure faces from these cameras whilst making a political statement.

On Tuesday 20th January I was in Hull for Digital Utopias. I was originally going as a regular attendee but was invited at the last minute by Alex McLean to take part in A Yorkshire Hack, which was an informal relaxed space for hacking. I was in a hackathon with him a couple of weeks earlier at Hack the City, so jumped at the chance to do some more!

Like Hack The City there wasn’t really any agenda or goals for the day. We had access to a bunch of data to play with but I wanted to make something that related to the day itself. Upon arriving I looked for opportunities to work with the event. Could I access data about attendees? Were there any devices in the venue that I could re-appropriate? Was there a 3D printer or 3D scanner that I could use to recreate objects or attendees? I also thought about hijacking the #artsdigital hashtag but was quickly shot down by the Arts Council England Twitter account (nice work!).

On 1st August from 19:00 I’ll be exhibiting some new work alongside a slew of other artists for Digbeth First Friday.

Black Hole Club (from Vivid Projects) and Stryx are delighted to invite you to Between Two Worlds, a Lynchian collaborattion hosted by Vivid Projects, incorporating set design, projections, dictaphones, optical illusions, forests, wallpaper, sound installations, things indoors that should be outdoors, scraping noises, and cinematic soundtracks, all loosely inspired by the TV show Twin Peaks.

On the 16th November, my last evening of my visit to Barcelona, I performed with Gabriella Gardosi and Kerian Lao as Feedback Symphony at Molécula/The Wrong Biennale. We were joined by musicans Diego Lara, Evgeni Krane and Hugh Tetley.

For our performance we projected onto several layers of translucent fabric that were installed in the space. This allowed the projections to be seen from both the front and the back. It was interesting to visuals being interacted with instead of just being observed. It’s an idea that I’ll definitely explore further in the future!

This time I utilised an unmodified Panasonic WJ AVE5 together with some computer-based glitches.

Recently Tony Hill and I have collaborated on a few videos, combining glitch art aesthetics and 3D fractals.

The first output of my circuit bending the VEC1070 comes in the form of this collaboration - me on visuals - with Alex Juno (of Elmo Sexwhistle)

For the input I rendered a translucent green triangle onto the screen in Pure Data. The rest is just adjustments in the contrast (in Pure Data and on the VEC1070) and twiddling of some knobs.

Aside from a brief post announcing our performance at SOUNDkitchen a few months back I’ve failed to actually talk about the Birmingham Laptop Ensemble (BiLE).

BiLE (Birmingham Laptop Ensemble) are a collaborative group of composers and performers of instrumental and electroacoustic music. Six artists were brought together through their shared interest in live performance and desire to perform and improvise together in an interactive ensemble.

On Thursday 17th March from 8pm I’ll be providing visuals for BiLE (Birmingham Laptop Ensemble) at SOUNDktichen Balkan Fusion at the Hare and Hounds

BiLE are a collaborative group of composers (instrumental and electroacoustic), performers and programmers who are all active members of BEAST (Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre). The core group of six artists were brought together through their shared interest in live performance and desire to perform and improvise together in an interactive ensemble.

Something wot me and MeeNoKawaii did.

So yeah, the first exhibition of B-VAC (Birmingham Visual Arts Coalition) is taking place soon. See flyer below. [

I’ve set up a Twitter account for B-VAC but not quite sure where to go with it yet. Let’s call it an experiment!

Insectoid went to Earlswood and engaged in a silent, collaborative painting experiment.

We decided the basic plan beforehand, but no verbal communication took place during the 2.5 hours of painting.

The process of carrying back to the studio had an effect on some sections of the painting
